Bruno is a labrador/dachsund mix (he's got the head of a lab and a body like a hotdog dog) . I kept pulling back the hair on his neck looking to see if I could find where they sewed him together. It was a hot, muggy day. The first bedroom is almost complete Brunilda's son Raymond helped hang some drywall. He loves to help on the house and we love his company.
The garage that was walled-in is being re-sheathed in preparation for new siding. Nail guns: loud, powerful, dangerous=fun! (hey Steve, where's your safety glasses?) This corner of the roof was being held up by (your best guess here). Over the last few days, me and that electric panel have become real close friends.
Steve finishes the garage wall=looks great! We've just about got the mudding and taping done in bedroom #1. That leaves us with only a few thousand square feet left. Steve examines the dry rot on the facia, which will be coming done ASAP. That rosebush by his ladder bites anyone who gets too close. Steve and Craig begin disassembly. There's a wasp nest in almost every rafter bay (that's the reason I'm the one on the ground).
Steve and Craig rescue the back of the house. Yes, they're working right up against 220 volts (and yes, they made it down off the ladders safely). 30 lbs. of spicy crawfish among nine particpants. After about 15 minutes of peeling and eating, we couldn't feel our lips anymore. Craig gives Mondo a new carburator. Honestly, he needs a lot more than just a carburator.
Putting in the attic fan meant starting early before the roof got too hot. Craig puts the finishing touches to the shingles around the fan. It may look like only a few feet of installed soffit but Steve and Craig spent three hard days putting things in order just to get to this point. The bathrooms share a common wall and this is point where the tubs connect. Don't ask me why I decided to dig up and remove the drain=I wound up putting it right back the next day!
Steve carves up some vinyl siding for the back of the house while Craig contemplates how the next piece will run. The rough plumbing for the bathrooms is complete! Rube Goldberg would be proud. Falling under the too good to make up category, Steve had just finished saying Well, it looks like the rain's going to miss us when we got soaked by a cloudburst. We made Steve get the tools from outside before they got really, really wet. Craig inspects the tub and shower surround installed in the master bath.
Bathroom #2 has its tub installed. Hey, hey=the tubs are in!!! Upon arriving, Thom wastes no time and immediately sets to work (on a hamburger bun). Drilling out the holes for the shower surround. Brunilda & son Raymond help clean up the site after a long, hot day.
Bubba makes a new friend (Bubba is on the left) Joel wanted to test out the washing machine using my shirt. Hey, it's not that dirty - there's still some white on it. Service with a smile. With 1000000% humidity, those Cokes hit the spot! (That's right - one million percent!) Joel finishes out framing the utility room while Thom runs the electric.
Stacy did an outstanding job taping & mudding. How he gets his light sabre to look like a tape measure is beyond me. When it rains in New Orleans, it rains! Heather gets to the hard to reach spots with primer.

The funny thing is I can't remember what they were doing! Heather being Heather. A volunteer cuts out the old window. John is in the background cutting soffit. Matt trowels out thinset for the first course of tile.
Matt cuts out for the toilet flange. Matt puts on the finishing touches to the utility room. All I can say is 'Wow'. All I can say is 'Whoa'.
Kevin & Keith measure for a piece of flooring. Cory wrangles with some cornerbead. Jeff gives instructions to the newbies on how to use a break (not take a break=they knew how to do that!). See, there they are breaking.
According to Kevin, the roll on the right was noticably more abosorbant (and softer). Keith forced us to take a well deserved dacquri break (well, he didn't actually force us). Max wrestles a 15' alligator into submission. He makes it look so easy, doesn't he! Susan wrestles a 15'' alligator into submission. That's my girl!
Max never misses a chance to feed a gator. If he could only be that motivated to feed the dog. 'Musician's Village' in the Upper Ninth Ward. All that remains of the Lower Ninth Ward is an occasional abandoned house. At this point, this area is nothing more than vacant lots and tall grass. An abandoned house in the Lower Ninth Ward with a sign posting the date that it will be demolished.
Life comes back to the Lower Ninth Ward slowly. Here is prep work done prior to pouring a foundation for a new home. Brandon bends (yep - you can bend it!) drywall for wrapping the arched front windows. Brandon and Jason put on the finish coat of paint to our floor trim. Blaine fills the screw holes in the ceiling (it had to be re-attached as the nails were failing in many places).
Anytime Jeff, Alex & Victoria show up, it's a cause for celebration (or just lunch). Volunteers, the young and young at heart, have been a real blessing to our project. We can't thank you enough for all your hard work! All the kitchen cabinets are now in place. With the exception of towel bars and TP holders, the bathrooms are ready to go.
Closet organizers are the only thing left to do in the bedrooms. The countertops are in place. All the ceiling fixtures are being updated. Coach Leroy (from Brunilda's school) and sons help install new fans. When necessary, guys sometime do read the instructions!
Janelle gets one last measurement for cabinets. Brunilda's sister Joanne comes for a final walk thru. Sue and Max created a work of art that included the names of all the volunteers who contributed to the rebuilding of Brunilda's home. Thank you for all your hard work!
